What Is a Thread Lift, And Is It Right for You?
Are you noticing your jawline getting softer? Or maybe it’s just that your skin isn’t sitting the way it used to? You're not imagining it. These changes are a natural part of facial aging, and they're some of the most common concerns we hear from patients who aren't quite ready for surgery, but want more than what injectables alone can offer.
That's exactly where a thread lift fits into the conversation.
What Is a Thread Lift?
A thread lift is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that uses dissolvable sutures—thin, medical-grade threads—to physically lift and reposition sagging facial tissue. Once placed beneath the skin, the threads create subtle but immediate lift while also stimulating your body's natural collagen response over time. The result is a more defined, refreshed appearance without the recovery timeline of a surgical facelift.
How Does It Work?
The procedure takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the areas being treated. The threads are inserted using a small needle or cannula and gently anchored to lift the targeted tissue into a higher, more youthful position.
There are two mechanisms at work here. The first is mechanical: the lift itself provides an immediate improvement in contour and definition. The second is biological: as the threads dissolve over the following months, they stimulate fibroblast activity and collagen production in the treated area, which supports skin quality and firmness over the longer term.
What Can a Thread Lift Address?
Thread lifts are most commonly used to improve:
Sagging along the jawline and early jowling
Descent of the mid-face and cheeks
Laxity along the neck
Drooping brow position
It's an especially good fit for patients in their late 30s to early 50s who are beginning to notice volume loss and tissue descent, but whose skin hasn't yet reached the degree of laxity that would benefit most from a surgical facelift.
How Is It Different From Filler or Tox?
This is one of the most common questions we receive. Neuromodulators, such as Botox, work by relaxing specific muscles to soften lines and create some lift. Dermal fillers restore volume to areas that have deflated over time. Both are excellent tools, but neither one physically lifts or repositions tissue. Thread lifts are structural where injectables are restorative. For the right patient, combining threads and filler can produce a beautifully balanced, natural outcome.
What Is the Recovery Like?
One of the most appealing aspects of a thread lift is the minimal downtime. Most patients experience some mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness in the first several days following the procedure. Some temporary skin puckering at the insertion sites is normal and typically resolves within one to two weeks. We generally advise patients to avoid strenuous activity, excessive facial movement, and sleeping face-down for the first couple of weeks. Most people return to normal daily activities within a few days.
How Long Do Results Last?
Results from a thread lift typically last anywhere from one to three years, depending on the threads used, the areas treated, the patient's skin quality, and how well the body responds to collagen stimulation. Because the threads dissolve naturally, there's no foreign material left behind, and the procedure can be repeated as needed.
Is a Thread Lift a Replacement for a Facelift?
A surgical facelift remains the gold standard for significant, long-lasting correction of facial laxity. It addresses the deeper structural layers of the face in a way that no non-surgical procedure currently can. For patients with moderate to advanced skin laxity, a facelift will deliver more comprehensive and lasting results.
A thread lift is better understood as a "bridge" option that’s appropriate for earlier-stage laxity, for patients who aren't yet candidates for surgery, or for those who want to extend the results of a prior facelift without returning to the operating room.
Is a Thread Lift Right for You?
Ideal candidates tend to share a few characteristics: they're generally in good health, have mild to moderate skin laxity, and are looking for a natural improvement rather than a dramatic transformation. If you're already considering a facelift but aren't ready for that level of commitment, a thread lift may be an appropriate interim step.
As with any procedure, an honest conversation with your provider is the most important first step. At OA Facial Plastics, we don't recommend treatments based on trends. We recommend what's clinically appropriate for you.
